Gold - French Gulch in Autumn

Gold — French Gulch

Breckenridge, Colorado

Weathered mining ruins stand among the brilliant gold of autumn aspens in French Gulch, a landscape shaped by more than a century and a half of Colorado mining history. Gold was discovered here in 1860, helping ignite the mining boom that would define Breckenridge and the surrounding mountains for generations.

Today, the abandoned structures remain scattered through a landscape nature is slowly reclaiming—a reminder of the people who once came to these mountains in search of fortune, and of how quickly even their most permanent works can become part of the wilderness again.
